I feel like this photograph should give rise to a novel

I have seen baskets of this size referred to as thimble baskets

and quite dreamy

it seems there were a whole series of these made for export in the earlyish 20th century featuring an array of different dogs as well as other animals

Beautifully Aged Nearly Square Native American Woven Splint Basket antique printing block Wear and aging to theI walk past a lot of baskets in these parts, but the color on this one, woven of ash splint I believe, struck me as especially beautiful, with the pattern of the way the splint has weathered amplifying the woven construction of the basket in just the right way. It has definitely lived a life there is a bit of loss visible on one side particularly, and it slants a bit when viewed from that direction but it's the age and wear that really makes it.
